Welcome back to the Mae B Mindful Podcast. I don’t know what just came over me. I’m your host, Hannah Mae, and this week’s episode is on hypnosis and the mind—not just the brain necessarily, although of course that’s part of our mind. I want to discuss the ever-expansive layers of the subconscious that are integral with Spirit. That’s what I really want to talk about—being able to access that through hypnosis and reclaiming agency in our thinking. This will do nothing but empower and help us align with and access the truth of who we are, how we live our lives, and how we experience our lives. Life can sometimes be a [ __ ] show, depending on what we come with, our early experiences in life, and the messages pressed into us as children. Even with the best-intentioned people involved, there is always stuff to undo because our parents and those who raise us are human, just like we are. They have their own false conditioning to examine.
It is said that the subconscious is the gateway to the soul, and that just really excites the [ __ ] out of me because it’s true in my experience. Soul work is what I’m interested in; it’s the most exciting to me because it can expand our experience and allow us to overcome and transcend our problems. It all starts in our thought life. When we examine the beliefs and ideas we’re operating from and change those that are stunting, handicapping, and limiting us, we can do so effectively and efficiently in hypnosis, more so than with other modalities. I speak from my own experience because I am for what’s effective. Ultimately, I want a solution that works.
Therapy has its place and can be helpful for many people, and at one point in my life, it was very helpful for me. But there was only so much I could address with the conscious mind. I reached a point of frustration because, while I felt like I knew myself well and had many awarenesses, I was still left with problems. I needed to heal, have a new experience, and reach those places within me that were lost. I needed to reclaim parts of myself. Rational and logical approaches weren’t sufficient. This is why mindfulness coaches or life coaches can be great but can only take us so far. When it comes to a spiritual experience, that’s what will transcend and overcome our problems—especially our unsolvable problems. The formula of programs like 12-step works because it requires an entire psychic change and spiritual awakening. The soul is bigger. When we can transcend and tap into that, we can overcome anything. There is no problem too big, no unsolvable problem, only according to our human resources.
You may have seen the metaphor of the iceberg: the tip above the water is just a fraction of the mind; everything else is below the water's surface. The subconscious and unconscious mind are vast landscapes. In the conscious mind, we stay very logical and practical. Most adults with busy lives spend the majority of their time operating from these brainwave frequencies. However, if we want to access the unlimited, ever-expansive terrain of our beings, we have to delve into these other parts of our mind.
A lot of people think hypnosis is scary or have a lot of unawareness and apprehension around it. People are either intrigued or dismissive, often due to preconceived notions from movies or misinformation. But the truth is that hypnosis is a completely natural state that people enter multiple times a day when relaxed. Hypnosis allows you to access your true self, reclaim yourself, heal, and stand in alignment with your truth and authenticity. It is essential to choose a practitioner who aligns with your values and makes you feel comfortable.
Hypnosis is a heightened state of focus and a deep state of relaxation. For example, driving on a familiar route where you don’t have to pay attention to the directions and suddenly realize you’ve arrived without remembering the journey—that’s a form of hypnosis. Your subconscious holds and stores all the information and experiences you've ever had. Hypnosis helps us access and process this information to rewire outdated beliefs.
Children are almost always in hypnosis in their early years, in a play state where they access their imagination beautifully. This state is their superpower, which is why these formative years are so crucial. We are very receptive to suggestion in this state, and repeated messages become part of our belief system. As adults, we need to go into the subconscious to rewire what no longer works.
Most of our beliefs and ideas come from misperceptions. Traumatic or scary events in childhood can lead to incorrect assigned meanings. For example, believing "I'm not good enough" or "I'm not worthy" can persist into adulthood, despite conscious efforts to change. Only by changing these core beliefs can we have a new experience and operate differently.
People often feel apprehensive about hypnosis, but you’ve probably already hypnotized yourself today by scrolling through Instagram or watching the news. We need to dehypnotize ourselves to be successful. Hypnosis isn’t a magic state; it’s accessing yourself in a way that allows you to apply new, accurate information as an adult to what was incorrectly processed as a child. Most of our beliefs and fears come from childhood misperceptions. By neutralizing and reprocessing these beliefs, we can discard outdated ideas and make way for new, beneficial ones.
There’s so much more to say about this, and I’m very excited about it. Stay tuned for more conversations on the mind and hypnosis. Be well, soul seekers. Mwah! Until next time.
